How Well Does the Chicago Marathon Runner Tracking Technology Work?
Marathon tracking systems use electronic race timing data to report the athlete’s progress along the course. Timing checkpoints record the time when participants cross designated points, allowing systems to calculate splits and show progress throughout the race.
Just because you see information on a tracking app doesn’t mean it should be automatically assumed to be a continuous GPS-verified location. Some tracking interfaces may estimate a runner’s position between checkpoints using recorded pace and previous timing data.
This distinction is important for spectators trying to meet runners along the course. The displayed location may not be where the participant actually was at that time.
Can you follow Chicago Marathon runners without downloading the app?
“Yes. If you want to use a browser instead of a mobile application, the official results website is available.

What to Do if Chicago Marathon Live Tracking Won’t Update
If the location or timing information for a runner has not changed, verify the most recent timing point that was recorded before deciding that there is a problem. Runner updates depend on timing information being available and it is normal to have gaps between recorded checkpoints.
If the information seems to be out of date, reload the results page, verify your internet connection or reopen the official app. The browser-based results platform could offer another way to get race info, especially if the app is in heavy demand.
If a participant is missing an update, it does not mean they have ceased to run.
