StarCraft has kept an unusually low profile for years. Blizzard has given fans a surprise reason to tune back in days before BlizzCon 2026.
The official StarCraft site has been showing intentional visual glitches, flickering elements and secret messages. Additionally, fans who have dug around the site further have unearthed content that appears to be intended to be discovered rather than dismissed as a technical glitch.
The timing is very difficult to overlook.
Blizzard has already confirmed that its opening ceremony will feature major game announcements. BlizzCon 2026 will be held on Sept. 12 in Anaheim, California. StarCraft will also be at the event, with content to play and rewards for watching.
But Blizzard has not announced any new StarCraft games.
That’s an important difference. The events depicted on the website are real. The result remains to be seen. The StarCraft site is being weird.
The activity first caught attention in early September, when visitors to the StarCraft: Remastered website noticed strange effects.
Images and interface elements jerky and warp. Later, visitors to the site’s browser console found cryptic messages and references to the StarCraft universe.
The changes have evolved into something resembling an Alternate Reality Game (ARG), a familiar marketing tactic where clues are disseminated via websites, messages and other digital content before a larger unveiling.
Fans have continued to decode the material as BlizzCon approaches.
That alone would make the changes to the website interesting. The fact that they are appearing before Blizzard’s most important event makes them much harder to ignore.# BlizzCon couldn’t come at a better time.
BlizzCon will take place at the Anaheim Convention Center on September 12-13.
For the opening ceremony for the announcement of major games, Blizzard announced that its president Johanna Faries will be joined by representatives from its franchises.
The schedule of events for World of Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch and other Blizzard properties is already available.
StarCraft is different.
Blizzard has begun delivering new StarCraft content directly to the fans, but no such announcement has been made regarding the company’s plans for the franchise.
That uncertainty has crept into the story.
A new StarCraft game is the obvious question
In the lead up to BlizzCon, reports have suggested that Blizzard has been working on another game set within the StarCraft universe that could possibly move beyond the real-time strategy format normally associated with the series.
That reporting has often portrayed a shooter.
The website campaign has inevitably revived public interest in the reports.
Blizzard has not yet confirmed it is working on a StarCraft shooter to unveil at Blizzcon. However, the appeal of the possibility is greatly improved compared to a few weeks ago.
Also, no confirmation on StarCraft 3.
At the moment, the claims that the website campaign is definitely pointing to StarCraft 3, or a shooter, or a remaster, or whatever other game are more than Blizzard has said publicly.Fans are being given more clues.
It’s not just a visual effect that creates the mystery of the website.
The StarCraft community has been exploring secret messages and making associations between characters, locations and events in the franchise’s lore.
Recent discoveries have also made talking points of characters who have been absent from the series for years.
This gives Blizzard a lot of freedom to take the campaign in all sorts of directions.
This can create a whole new game. It could expand the scope of an existing StarCraft title. It could be tied to a one-of-a-kind project set within the StarCraft universe.
Or maybe Blizzard has something else in mind.
The key thing here is that the campaign seems deliberate and happening in the lead up to BlizzCon.
StarCraft has been waiting for a new chapter
Few Blizzard titles have the same history.
The original StarCraft, released in 1998, was one of the biggest influences on PC real-time strategy games. StarCraft II came out in 2010 and was later expanded with the releases of Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void.
Competitive StarCraft also played a major role in the evolution of contemporary esports.
But for most of the last decade the franchise has been largely missing a major new game.
That makes even the most obscure website campaign unusually important.
Blizzard doesn’t need to say “StarCraft 3” to excite people. For a community that has been thinking about the future for years, the fact alone that StarCraft is once again on the active development agenda would be big news.# The answer might come on September 12.
The waiting time should be short.
The most logical place for Blizzard to announce whatever it’s working on is at BlizzCon 2026, opening ceremony of which starts on September 12.
In the meantime it’s important to keep the distinction between two separate facts.
The official StarCraft site is currently experiencing an unusual occurrence.
We’re still waiting to confirm news of an upcoming feature in StarCraft.
The significance of the next few days precisely stems from the discrepancy between what Blizzard is showing and what it has actually stated. After years of relative silence, StarCraft is back in the public eye.
